August Student of the Month: Savannah Smith

Some of our favorite students to work with at Music & Rock School are those that come to us with prior musical experience, or have been labeled “musically gifted” at some point.  These students typically have a passion for exploring and learning about music on all levels.  That is certainly the case with our August Student of the Month, Savannah Smith.  At 15 years old she is already proficient on more instruments that most people will pick up in a lifetime.  Her talents include guitar, singing and songwriting, piano, drums, ukulele, mandolin, banjo and xylophone!

Savannah has only been a student at Music and Rock School for four months, working on guitar and songwriting in her lessons, but quickly got involved in other MaRS activities such as the Spring Concert. “It was so much fun to be a part of. It was a much more personal feel with the audience being so close and it was overall very enjoyable”. She states that her favorite thing about lessons is “listening to songs to incorporate into my own original music”.

Savannah sites musical influences such as John Mayer, Sarah Bareilles, Regina Spektor, Mumford & Sons, Ingrid Michaelson, The Civil Wars and Ed Sheeran. Savannah also commented that her favorite song to play on guitar is the Civil Wars’ acoustic version of “Billie Jean”, originally by Michael Jackson, and that she would like to learn how to play Fast Car by Tracy Chapman.

Savannah’s love for music is not limited to her involvement at Music and Rock School, and she also studies voice and is a member of her school marching band and chorus program. Also, she says her proudest musical accomplishment is auditioning for The Voice.

Savannah’s long-term goals in music include getting signed with a record label to start her career; to propel this goal, she is currently working on an EP that is set to release on September 24th. The EP will have 7-8 tracks of Savannah’s original songs and music, including a couple instrumentals, and songs reflecting her personal experiences. She describes the genre as “Alternative Singer/Songwriter”. Savannah has been working very hard of this EP, and would like everyone to check it out near the end of Septemeber! In the meantime, check out her ReverbNation page!
